Restoring and redeveloping the RSC’s Costume Workshop – home to the theatre’s award-winning costume makers since the 1950’s.
This challenging project conserved the 19th century Grade II listed buildings, and created additional modern visitor facilities for RSC site tours.
The redevelopment included 1,644 sq m of workshop accommodation, mainly over two storeys, providing enhanced facilities for the largest in-house costume-making department of any British theatre.
The project also created a new entrance to the RSC offices and Costume Workshop using the 1887 former scene dock doors built for the original Shakespeare Memorial Theatre.
The transformed workshops feature extended workspace for the costume team, an improved stock room, larger premises for the millinery, jewellery and dyeing and print workshops, office space, larger fitting room, and a new lift and plant room in the roof space.
