Construction of a new aggregate processing plant, which will treat incinerator bottom ash (IBA) generated by two UK energy recovery facilities (ERF).
CLIENT: Day Aggregates
VALUE: £8.7m
DESIGNER: HSP Consulting
The plant is located on a 6 acre site on OGEE Business Park on Wellingborough’s Finedon Road Industrial Estate. The facility opened in January 2024 and is operated in partnership with Day Aggregates.
It is anticipated the site will employ 20 people and it is expected to process around 200,000 tonnes of ‘IBA’ every year from Covanta’s existing facilities at Rookery South in Bedfordshire and Newhurst in Leicestershire.
The recovered metals from the IBA will create aggregate products for use in the construction industry. The partnership is a first for Covanta Europe and will provide the company with a sustainable, long-term solution for treating IBA, strengthening their contribution to the circular economy, by way of producing new recyclable materials.
Centred on an aggregate processing plant, the Wellingborough site will enable production of Day Aggregates’ EcoBlend range of products.
The new facility features the most up-to-date processing equipment, ensuring full recovery of ferrous and non-ferrous metals from the IBA.
The partnership is both innovative, and crucial to the operation of facilities which form an important part of UK infrastructure.
