Stepnell were appointed by Restful Homes Developments to design and build a new residential care home in the Tile Hill area of Coventry.

The four-storey, 106-bed development, catering for older adults, is built on vacant land at the corner of Banner Lane and Wickmans Drive.

The 6,700 sq m building features extensive facilities for residents including communal lounges, a café, computer rooms and a hair and beauty salon as well as dining rooms, staff facilities and laundry and kitchen areas.

The building is a combination of traditional masonry construction and supporting steelwork and sits on precast, piled ground beam foundations. The floors comprise beam and block and precast planks and the flat roofs consist of engineered timber joists with a single ply membrane.

The façades utilise a combination of finishes including facing brickwork, coloured render and terracota aluminium rainscreen cladding. Stairwells feature curtain walling and bespoke brise soleil and the roof garden is enclosed with glass balustrades. Eave details have been designed to match the aluminium rainscreen cladding.

External works include a residents’ garden and terrace area as well as a rooftop garden. A car park and covered drop-off area were also built.

Ten per cent of the building’s energy will be generated on-site through the use of air source heat pumps to pre-heat the hot water system.
