Stepnell selected to create new student accommodation for
Oriel College, Oxford

Stepnell has been appointed by Oriel College at the University of Oxford to carry out a £3.75 million conservation programme which will create brand-new student accommodation at its Rhodes Building on the High Street.

The work to the Grade 2* listed Rhodes Building, which dates from 1911, will include altering the roof to create a new third floor of student rooms for Oriel.

The scheme, designed by Marcus Beale Architects, will provide 12 brand-new student bedrooms within a folded copper ‘origami’ crown above the original Edwardian baroque roof, as well as repairing, altering and upgrading the rest of the building. Completion is scheduled for July 2014.

“We are delighted to be working with Oriel College using our expertise in working on listed buildings and in delivering student accommodation to the highest standards to create this brand-new accommodation,” says Tom Wakeford, director of Stepnell. The Stepnell team will use its considerable experience in logistical planning to manage the challenges of working in a sensitive city centre location without disruption to neighbours and the local environment. Stepnell’s appointment by Oriel College as preferred contractor in April 2013 has enabled the company to work closely with Oriel College, its consultants and key supply chain subcontractors to develop their approach to the scheme and ensure that works commenced on site efficiently.
