Nottingham team volunteers brighten up Popular community centre in Leicester

Seventeen hard-working staff from our Nottingham team volunteered their skills, time and tools to brighten up the facilities at the Somali Development Services (SDS) Community Centre in Abingdon Road, Leicester.

Organised through local charity Leicestershire Cares as part of their Team Challenge 2017, Stepnell volunteers spent two days decorating a new activity room for children with special needs, installing whiteboards, painting walls and ‘boxing in’ pipes. The team also created a patterned mural on the outside brickwork and added painted coverings to windows and a mesh fence outside.

Stepnell funded the materials and equipment, spending around £2,500 to complete the community project.

The SDS Community Centre offers a variety of services for disadvantaged people in Leicester and the local Somali community, including homework help clubs for young people and drop-in centres for adults.

“The SDS Centre is a well-used community facility and we’re delighted our Stepnell volunteers have been able to help out,” said Nottingham director Tom Sewell. “It was great to be able to use our construction skills to brighten up the centre and improve its facilities. We’re also grateful to Leicestershire Cares for organising this volunteering opportunity. We had a lot of fun doing the makeover and we hope everyone likes the results.”

Leicestershire Cares brings businesses and communities together, providing opportunities for companies to make a difference across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Through its two years of membership with the charity, Stepnell has taken part in its annual voluntary challenges and organised six work placements for local people – one of whom took part in the volunteer refurbishment at the SDS Community Centre – giving them the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and job references which they can use to find permanent employment.

Sarah Green, community development manager at Leicestershire Cares, said: “The team from Stepnell worked extremely hard and achieved a tremendous amount. This is a great example of how businesses can give a helping hand to local community groups in need of support. The improvements will be enjoyed by hundreds of adults and children that use the facilities at the centre every year.”
