Stepnell working on £500,000 classroom scheme for
Dorset school

The Stepnell Poole office has been selected for a £500,000 scheme which will create six new classrooms for The Gryphon School in Sherborne, Dorset.

Two-storey extension

Work is under way on the development which involves the conversion of two squash courts at The Gryphon Leisure Centre, the school’s sports facility which is also used by the community. The conversion scheme for the squash courts will create two new classrooms upstairs while an existing fitness suite will move into the ground-floor space. Stepnell will additionally transform the space which formerly housed the fitness suite into two classrooms. The project also includes the construction of a new two-storey extension in the south-east corner of the school site which will house two new classrooms and a lift.

Live environments

The construction scheme, set to be completed in March 2014, is designed by Sherborne-based Oriel Architecture.

Stepnell director Derek Middleton says: “The company has extensive experience of carrying out work in busy, ‘live’ environments. Careful programming and a sensitive approach enables us to ensure that the school and leisure centre can continue operating as normal.” In 2005, Stepnell completed work on a children’s centre and some temporary classrooms for The Gryphon School.
