Stepnell awarded £3.7m De Montfort University Refurbishment

10th October 2014

Stepnell has been awarded the contract to transform a former sports centre at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) into a state-of-the-art conference and events venue.

The £3.7 million refurbishment scheme at what used to be the John Sandford sports centre, in Western Boulevard, is part of De Montfort University’s £136 million campus redevelopment project which will provide cutting-edge new buildings and teaching facilities for students and staff over the next few years.

At Stepnell, we have specialist expertise in complex building refurbishment projects and will convert the existing John Sandford Building into a bespoke, multi-functional space which will be used to house exhibitions, functions, conferences and events. The works will involve the complete refurbishment of the former sports hall and associated buildings including timber over-cladding and new roof coverings. The new 2,500m2 facility will house an adaptable main hall, stores, kitchen-servery, office space, meeting rooms and changing facilities.

The project is due for completion in August 2015.

“This is an exciting transformation project which will provide a fantastic state-of-the-art conference and events facility for students and staff. We’re looking forward to seeing the new venue taking shape and working with De Montfort University on the project,” says Stepnell operations and commercial manager Thomas Sewell.

Umesh Desai, DMU’s deputy director of estates, says: “Stepnell has all the expertise we require to transform the former sports centre into an exciting new venue for the university."

“We look forward to working with them and it is great to think that in just six months we will have a state-of-the-art conference and events venue which will not only add to the student experience here at DMU but benefit people and businesses across Leicester.”
