Swindon Borough Council appoints Stepnell to extend specialist unit at local school

10 January 2014

Our Wantage team is to undertake a £500,000 programme to extend and refurbish a specialist unit for students with physical disabilities at The Commonweal School, Swindon.

Swindon Borough Council has appointed Stepnell for the scheme to enlarge and upgrade facilities at the school’s Physical Impairment Unit.

Work will start this month (January 2014) on the project which will include the creation of an additional storey – housing two new classrooms - on top of an existing single-storey building. Other internal refurbishment work will include the extension and improvement of existing physiotherapy and first aid rooms and cloakrooms.

As the unit is located in an enclosed courtyard, construction materials will have to be brought through the school, or craned in, with careful planning ensuring minimum disruption. The construction programme will also be closely coordinated with a separate construction project already under way at the school to create a new sixth form college.

The Physical Impairment Unit work is scheduled for completion in autumn 2014.

The project was awarded to Stepnell, through a competitive tendering process. It follows Stepnell’s successful completion of the new East Wichel Community Centre for Swindon Borough Council in 2013.

“This scheme will create major improvements for students and teachers at the Physical Impairment Unit providing extra space and more modern facilities,” says Stepnell contracts manager Jamie White. “Our team brings considerable experience of delivering construction projects in schools and other ‘live’ environments to this scheme and our aim, as always, will be to ensure that the work goes smoothly with the least possible disruption to school life.”
