Stepnell installs steel frame of new VIth Form building at Stourport High School & VIth Form College

Work is well under way on a cutting-edge new VIth Form building at The Stourport High School & VIth Form College in Worcestershire.  The school secured £3.5 million from the Education Funding Agency to create the state-of-the-art learning facilities which will be used by 240 VIth Form students from Stourport-on-Severn and the surrounding area.

Stepnell has been awarded the construction contract by the college to build the new VIth Form complex which includes single and two-storey areas, a lecture theatre/performance space, refectory, science laboratories, information and communications technology facilities including 16 classrooms.

The construction programme has just reached a key milestone with the installation of the new building’s 9.5 metre-high steel frame.

The development, designed by Sheppard Building and Project Consultancy alongside Robothams Architects, will create much-needed modern, purpose-built learning facilities, replacing the current VIth Form College buildings which are outdated and in a poor state of repair.  Due to open to students in September 2017, the next VIth Form College will also be closer to the main school making it easier for VIth Form students to use other school facilities.

Chris King, executive principal of The Stourport High School & VIth Form College, says: “The whole of our school community is extremely excited about our new VIth Form building, which will provide students from across the Wyre Forest a wonderful place to study.  Interviews are currently taking place with Year 11 students and there is certainly an air of excitement from our prospective students who will be the first year group to study in the fully equipped, modern classrooms and facilities.”

“This is an inspiring development which will enable VIth Form students and teaching staff to benefit from enhanced, modern learning facilities,” says director Richard Wakeford.

“Our team has extensive experience of delivering high-quality educational buildings and we are delighted to be working with The Stourport High School on this new VIth Form College which will provide students with the very best possible learning environment”. Stepnell has a strong record of working in ‘live’ settings and is liaising closely with the school to ensure the construction work creates minimal disruption to the school’s routine.
